Over 25yrs we have had a lot of women come through our club, they all have one thing in common, a natural desire for adventure.

One of the qualities I’ve noticed is, all of them are more daring than women I have met outside of the club. It’s like the reputation we have as a group attracts women who want to be challenged.

As a coach it’s a great privilege to work with athletes who are courageous and willing to work hard. In fact many of the girls in the squad have set a standard of toughness and resilience which has had the guys feel the pressure to keep the standard up.

It seems the women attracted to long course racing are quite different “animals” to “normal women”. There’s an attitude, a spirit in every one of them that shows as an almost unnatural determination. Girls are better at attending to details than guys.
Over the years we have had twenty-three girls qualify for Hawaii . They did this by being totally committed, being so consistent in their training, and being so tough on race day that they let nothing stand in their way.
All of the girls I have trained for an Ironman race have loved every session. The might complain a little here and there, but at no time did any of them not want to be there. I think the group suffering in tough weather conditions, bonds the group together. It doesn’t seem to matter much whether it’s girls or guys, the mateship formed changes lives. The memories last forever.
